International ambulance service

Hearts First Ambulance Service have undertaken over 1000 European road ambulance repatriations during its many years of service, many for privately funded individuals.

Below, we answer some of the questions frequently asked about our international ambulance service.

2020 UK Enterprise award
  • Can a relative travel with the patient?

Yes, we encourage a patient's relative as a known face can alleviate stress. We have 3 extra seats in the rear of each ambulance for extra passengers. There is no extra cost for extra passengers.

  • Can we take luggage?

Yes, a reasonable amount providing it will not hinder the patients care. Our ambulances are bespoke designed for the specific purpose of long distance repatriation and we have plenty of space for up to 3 large suitcases, plus hand luggage and we can also accommodate skis, snowboards and bicycles.

  • Can we stop for breaks?

Of course 😊, comfort stops and meal stops are built into journey times.

  • What happens should the patient take a turn for the worse?

All HFAS staff are all well-trained and very experienced medics who can assess the patient, and if unable to treat will divert to the nearest A & E. All HFAS vehicles have Sat Navs with hospitals programmed in.

  • The patient needs medication or injections during the journey, can you give it?

Providing the patient's medication is prescribed by the treating doctor/hospital and they have given it to the medic to administer, all our medics are trained to administer all JRCALC registered medications and are trained in sharps. Working under a doctor's directive the medic can administer most medications.

  • Are you insured for working abroad?

Yes. HFAS has in place every insurance to cover most eventualities, £10 million public liability, employer and medical treatment liability, breakdown cover for Europe (RAC fleet will give you a vehicle for onward travel but not an ambulance) in the event of a problem, alternative ambulance arrangements would be made, lost or damaged baggage insurance and airside insurance. Even our own crews have a work's travel insurance.

  • We have a problem with an all-male crew.

At times, due to one reason or another, an all-male crew may be inappropriate. We can supply a female nurse, paramedic or a female health care assistant.

  • Is there a problem with toileting?

HFAS staff are all trained to assist with toileting and personal needs. All ambulances carry sanitary equipment to cover every eventuality.

  • Can my children travel as well as my partner?

Yes, providing the patients escort is a family member authorised by the parents to assist the children with personal needs. All HFAS vehicles have DVD players and Wi-Fi to keep them occupied.
